Öxarfjörður Viewpoint
Today we left Husavik and followed the ‘Diamond Circle’ route toward our next hotel (we’d already covered Godafoss and Husavik, which also form part of the route). First stop was at a cliff viewpoint next to the road, and there were puffins and fulmars everywhere. We sat for quite a while taking far too many photos and watching the puffins walking about, disappearing into their burrows and flying back and forth from the sea.
A little further down the road was another view point. This one didn’t overlook a cliff-face like before, so we could only see a couple of puffins that were near the top (although they were much closer to us here), plus a flumar perched on the edge.
Ásbyrgi
Next stop was Ásbyrgi in Vatnajokull National Park. Asbyrgi is a huge horseshoe shaped glacial canyon, containing a forest (unusual in Iceland!) We walked to the top of Eyjan, a rock formation that runs into the centre of the canyon.
After our walk, we drove down to the far end of the canyon where where was a short trail to a small lake
