Day 9 - Skogarfoss to Hveragerdi

Skógafoss

Our hotel was next to the large waterfall Skogafoss, so we went for a walk before breakfast to explore the waterfall before the crowds appeared.

Hestavaðsfoss

We walked up the many many steps to get to the top of Skogafoss

And then followed the river for a short while, stopping at Hestavaðsfoss on the way

Kvernufoss

After heading back to the hotel for breakfast, we went on a walk to another waterfall close to where we were staying, Kvernufoss. You could walk right behind this one as well!

Dyrhólaey Cliffs

We back-tracked slightly and visited the cliffs at Dyrhólaey for views over the black beaches, but more importantly, another chance to see puffins! We didn’t think we’d get a better chance to see them than we had had in the north, but we were wrong – here they were really close to the footpaths just pottering about, so again here are many many puffin photos…

Reynisfjara

Next we went to Reynisfjara beach, where we could look back towards the cliffs we’d just been puffin spotting on.

Here we had a walk along the beach to Hálsanefshellir and other caves

Seljalandsfoss

After exploring the black beaches near Vik it was time to get back onto Route 1 and drive to where we’d be staying for the next couple of nights. Along the way we stopped at Seljalandsfoss

Gljufrafoss

A short walk from the Seljalandsfoss was Gljufrafoss. You had to walk through the river/balance on stones to get into the cave the water falls down into!
